How to Make a Circular Profile Picture

Many apps display avatars in a circle but expect a square file. If you upload a square photo, the app crops the corners for you — but sometimes you want the round version as an actual file, with transparent corners, for a website, slide or email signature.

Steps

1. Open the Crop to Circle tool and drop in your photo.
2. Use the zoom and move sliders to frame your face inside the circle — eyes roughly on the upper third.
3. Optionally add a thin ring for definition against light backgrounds.
4. Download the PNG. The area outside the circle is transparent.

Why PNG

The transparent corners need an alpha channel, which JPEG does not have. A "circular JPEG" would just have a white or black square behind it. Keep the file as PNG, or lossless WebP.

Sizing

Export at least 400×400 so it stays sharp on high-density screens. If the destination has a size limit, run the result through the Image Compressor afterwards.
